Law Enforcement Explorer Program
The Law Enforcement Career Exploring program is a national educational training program for youth on the duties, service, and structure of law enforcement. There are over 33,000 Explorers and more than 8,400 adult volunteers nationally. The focus of the program is to provide a career-oriented curriculum that gives young adults a chance to explore a career in law enforcement through contact and training with local law enforcement agencies. The program was founded in July of 1973 and is one of several career fields under the Exploring programs for Learning for Life. Learning for Life is a non-scouting subsidiary under Boy Scouts of America. The Exploring program is available to qualified youth who have passed the 8th grade and are ages 14 through 20.
The VPD Explorer Post #266 dates back to the 1980's when the local post was created with the assistance of the VPD staff. The post holds meetings on average twice a month at the Vermillion Police Department. Meetings consist of training sessions for the Explorers to include topics such as: traffic law, traffic stops and enforcement, CPR and first aid, firearms safety, crime scene processing and evidence procedures. The post also hosts guest speakers from other agencies to expose the Explorers to the various options for careers in law enforcement. The Post also sponsors informational sessions, including, for instance, a demonstration by a South Dakota State Trooper working with their K-9 unit.
Explorer members also assist with VPD community events. These events include the annual Bike Rodeo, National Night Out, and the VPD Open House. Explorers are cleared for ride along status with VPD officers after completing certain training requirements. Ride-alongs provide the Explorer with firsthand experience of what it is like to be a patrol officer in Vermillion. As a result of their experiences in the program, Explorers can be paired with officers to assist, for instance, with Dakota Days parade route traffic control or other, similar assignments.
The VPD Explorer Post provides invaluable experience for youth with an interest in a career in law enforcement. Whether their interest in law enforcement is of a city, county, state, or federal level, Law Enforcement Explorers will learn valuable skills that will assist them in their future endeavors.
